“d’ya see it yet?”

“no, no, swing harder!”

Tink tink TINK TINK

“A hole! Hit there!”

SLAM! Crumbling

Falling through

Landing soft on

Nothing

“Her head-”

“There’s nothing in here!”

Skeptic now

Of their own minds

“there should be

An entire world in here!”

Banging at their skulls

“is that how ours are?”

Picks through their own bones

They look into empty worlds

“anything in mine?”

“nothing!”

“yours, too!”

Climbing from the shell

Cracking others open

“there must be

A thought in one of them

For us to live on”

Splitting into white

Finding only white

Staring in dismay

At all the wasted gateways

7 – Eternity

Feet slamming

Grass tight against dirt

Salty stinging beads

In dark eyes

That always look forward

His ears filled with thumps

Of his feet

His heart

His aching head

There is no more grass

Feet on hard dirt

Wearing away

Ambitions bite his ankles

“More, farther, keep going!”

Lungs scream stop

They wheeze

But do not fail

Fueling his endless circle

Of almost got it

But wait there’s more

6 – Obsession

Eye on level

With the counter

Facing an army of crumbs;

Windex poisons

And paper towels smother;

Into the garbage with them!

Fingers on shelves

A speck of dust?!

Outrage!

Beat the shelves clean

With the blue dust glove.

The dog was on the couch,

You say?

Fetch the vacuum,

I’ll take care of this.

The living room is spotless

The kitchen is impeccable

She is satisfied

Until she walks into my room.

A jacket on the bed?!

Deodorant on the shelf?!

A SOCK ON THE CLOSET FLOOR?!

This cannot be,

It cannot, my child!

I thought you loved me.

But I do, mom!

Then CLEAN THIS MESS!

I do

But she comes marching in right after

Armed with dust spray

And vacuum

And windex.

5 – Unbreakable

He dove from a high cliff onto sharp rocks and they gasped. He smacked and he rolled and he came to a stop. They rushed down to stare at his dead body, when suddenly he rose. Bloody and torn open, he grinned. “I told you I was unbreakable!”

4 – Rivalry

Boasting buzzes

Which is better?

“Mine!” says the coffee.

Flaunting flavors

Which is better?

“Mine!” says the tea.

I’m thirsty

Which to drink?

“Me, me!” Screams the coffee

“I’ll pick you straight up!”

“No, me,” says the tea

“I’ll do it with flavor!”

I go to the sink

And get a glass of water.

3-Making History

I could make a cardboard boat and sail it around the world

I could dominate a piece of land

I could save the dying animals

I could cure every disease

I could blow up the world

But then there wouldn’t be anyone left to call that history.

I could do none of those things

And do some other things

I could live

I could ride in a walmart shopping cart

I could laugh when you make a face

I could find a hand to hold

I could make a heart speed up

I could sit here typing poems that will never be famous

I could do anything

And it will all have happened in history.

2-Complicated

A twist I see

In the logic you spew;

It’s strange for you admit

“it’s complicated.”

But listen to me please

I know what to do

Untangle the tiny twist

It’s simple now
